WAFarmers and the Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA) have made a joint submission to the Legislative Council’s Standing Committee on Legislation as part of its inquiry into the Firearms Act 2024 (WA).
While both organisations support the principle of modernising WA’s outdated firearms laws, the submission raises serious concerns about how the new Act affects primary producers — from arbitrary caps on firearm numbers and unworkable licensing structures for modern farm businesses, to mandatory GP-based mental health assessments with no international evidence base supporting their effectiveness.
The submission also documents a range of implementation problems encountered since staged commencement in April 2025, including unclear documentation requirements, delays in licensing, digital access barriers, and inconsistent advice from authorities.
