Back on the offense

The Pastoralists and Graziers Association of WA (PGA) is back on the front foot, with a restructured board, new staff and a renewed focus on fighting for the interests of the state’s farmers and pastoralists.

The organisation’s return comes after a turbulent period that saw RSM Australia appointed as voluntary administrators at the end of January, following an investigation into financial irregularities. By early March, a path forward had been agreed with creditors, allowing the PGA to exit administration and refocus its efforts on advocacy.

The government doesn’t seem to recognise the role played by pastoralists in the control of very destructive introduced animals.

President Tony Seabrook says the organisation has never been more needed, pointing to a growing list of government and industry issues that threaten the viability of pastoral operations across WA. Chief among them is the state’s firearms legislation, which Seabrook and vice president Digby Stretch say is being rolled out through a Firearms Portal that is overwhelmed, difficult to navigate and leaving law-abiding farmers at risk of non-compliance through no fault of their own.

Beyond firearms, the PGA is pushing hard on automatic pastoral lease renewal, Aboriginal cultural heritage legislation, and land tenure and water laws; issues Seabrook describes as critical to attracting the capital investment needed to modernise pastoral operations.

The association has also raised concerns about its access to government, noting that despite two requests over the past 12 months, the PGA is yet to secure a meeting with Premier Roger Cook.

There’s never been a greater time when pastoralists need to be protected from what the government might do to them

With momentum building and more staff on the way, the PGA says it is determined to be heard — and to protect an industry it argues feeds all Australians.
