LEAVE CPRS TO RUDD SAYS PGA
2009-10-21
The degree of farmer confusion over Carbon Pollution Reduction has been confirmed in separate statements this week by the National Farmers Federation, the WA Farmers Federation and the National Party, according to Pastoralists and Graziers Association Climate Change spokesman Leon Bradley.
“For once PGA is agreeing with the Nationals, that the NFF should not be supporting Malcolm Turnbull’s push to proceed with an ETS,” Mr Bradley said.
“No ETS means no extra cost to anyone, while implementing an ETS will not change the weather and will result in a heavily reduced standard of living for every Australian as well as heavy cost imposts on farmers - even if agriculture is excluded.”
“NFF is supporting the Opposition campaign to press ahead with ETS negotiations – provided they exclude agriculture - and Barnaby Joyce has correctly warned NFF that their actions must guarantee heavy extra costs to farmers.”
“Then today we have WA Farmers Federation spokesman Dale Park totally confusing the issue (and reverting to the NFF’s original position), by declaring farmers may lose potential benefits if they are excluded from an ETS.”
“It is no surprise that farmers are so confused on this issue, when the organisations that led them into uncompensated bans on land clearing and other costly concessions to conservation that created Australia’s coveted greenhouse status, almost totally at their cost, are now arguing over the amounts they may be able to siphon from the ETS ‘trough.’”
“All of them, including the Opposition, should withdraw from this debate and let Mr Rudd take full responsibility for the ETS calamity he is certain to create.”
